Anyone who is following the Los Angeles Lakers is undoubtedly also following the antics and exploits of Lavar Ball. Ball has used outrageous statements to help get his son Lonzo first into UCLA, and then onto the Lakers. The end game was perceived as all three Ball sons excelling at Chino Hills High School, then each completing a one-and-done at UCLA, and finally reuniting with the Lakers. While it is admirable for the elder Ball to want his sons to reach the NBA and play for the hometown team, but what is not clearly evident is that there seems to be a bigger agenda at play.
Tracing the history of Lavar Ball shows that Ball had differences with the boys’ high school coaches, then with Steve Alford at UCLA, and now with Luke Walton, the Lakers’ coach. Often, these disagreements stem from Lavar feeling that his boys are/were not being used properly or to their full potential. What makes this interesting is that, during his tirades against the coaches, Lavar always offers coaching tips, while indicating that he trained his boys in basketball, and that no one can coach them like he can, and these statements are what people miss amidst Lavar’s other pronouncements. Lavar will tell anyone who will listen that his desire is for all of his boys to suit up for the Lakers, and that he is speaking it into existence. However, what he isn’t telling people, at least indirectly, is that he desires to have his sons on the Lakers, but he also desires to occupy the head coach’s chair. It appears that Lavar Ball wishes to be the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, with his three sons as that stars of the team. While this is a lofty goal to have, his perceived pursuit of the position is interfering with his sons’ careers.
There are news reports that indicate that the Chino Hills coaches, as well as Steve Alford, are happy to be rid of the Ball boys because of Lavar Ball. Now, the Lakers are also becoming disenchanted with having Lavar as part of the Lakers organization as well. If the Lakers decide that they have had their fill of Lavar’s antics, they could decide to sever ties with Lonzo and move him to another team or outright waive him. If this happens, it is unlikely that other teams would be willing to accept the excess baggage that is Lavar Ball, no matter how talented Lonzo and his brothers are. If NBA teams are unwilling to sign the Ball boys because of their dad, then Lonzo might find himself in Europe with his brothers, instead of his brothers leaving Europe and joining the NBA. If this happens, the blame for this would be placed squarely on the head and mouth of the patriarch of the family, Lavar Ball.
